Dental Crowns
Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are custom-made restorations that cover and encase a damaged or weakened tooth. They are designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. Dental crowns are commonly used to protect and strengthen teeth that have undergone significant decay, fracture, or undergone root canal treatment. They provide long-lasting and durable solutions, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetics of your smile.
Why should I have Dental Crowns?
Restoring Tooth Function: Dental crowns provide a functional solution for teeth that are weakened, cracked, or significantly decayed. By encasing the tooth, the crown restores its strength and structural integrity, allowing you to bite, chew, and speak with confidence. Crowns also protect the underlying tooth from further damage or fracture.
Enhancing Aesthetics: Dental crowns are designed to closely resemble your natural teeth. They are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your existing teeth, ensuring a seamless and natural appearance. Crowns can significantly improve the aesthetics of your smile by covering teeth with discoloration, severe stains, or irregularities.
Long-lasting Durability: Dental crowns are crafted from high-quality materials, such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, ensuring their durability and longevity. With proper care and maintenance, a well-fitted crown can last for many years, providing a reliable and durable restoration for your tooth.
Protection after Root Canal Treatment: After undergoing root canal treatment, a tooth may become weak and susceptible to fracture. Dental crowns offer an effective solution to protect and strengthen the tooth, allowing it to function normally while preventing reinfection or further damage.
Versatility: Dental crowns are versatile and can be used to address various dental concerns. They can restore severely decayed or damaged teeth, cover misshapen or discolored teeth, close gaps between teeth, and even serve as a support for dental bridges.
Comfort and Stability: Dental crowns are designed to fit snugly over the prepared tooth, providing a comfortable and stable restoration. Once the crown is properly placed and bonded, it functions like a natural tooth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile comfortably.
Procedure Practise
Procedure: The placement of dental crowns typically involves two visits to your Dr. Harman Raheja Dentistry. Here is a general outline of the process:
Examination and Treatment Planning: During your initial visit, your dentist will examine the affected tooth and evaluate its condition. They will discuss treatment options, including the possibility of a dental crown, and address any concerns or questions you may have. X-rays or digital scans may be taken to assess the tooth’s structure and surrounding tissues.
Tooth Preparation: To ensure a proper fit for the crown, your dentist will first prepare the tooth by removing a thin layer of enamel from all sides. This creates space for the crown to fit comfortably. If the tooth is severely damaged or has extensive decay, additional tooth structure may need to be removed.
Impression or Digital Scan: After tooth preparation, an impression of your tooth will be taken using dental putty or a digital scanner. This impression serves as a model for creating your custom crown. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where skilled technicians craft the crown to precise specifications, including shape, size, and color.
Temporary Crown Placement: While your permanent crown is being fabricated, your dentist will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth to protect it. This temporary crown is made from a temporary material and serves as a temporary restoration until your final crown is ready.
Crown Fitting and Bonding: Once your custom crown is completed, you will return to the dental office for its placement. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown and check the fit, color, and aesthetics of the permanent crown. After ensuring a proper fit, the crown is bonded to the tooth using dental cement or adhesive. Any necessary adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable bite and natural appearance.
